Starting a Home Business In Photography

Starting a Home Business In Photography

A home photography business doesn’t necessarily require formal photography training. What it does require is a passion for photographic art, an artistic flair, the technical skills to operate the equipment and the ability to market the business.

Someone who is still in high school or college can start out preparing for a home photography business by taking photos for the yearbook or the student newspaper. A basic photography course would be very helpful as well. Nowadays it’s good to know how to operate both a 33 mm and a digital camera. Local community colleges often have very reasonably priced community education courses, many that involve just one class in the evening or on the weekend. Colleges that offer Lifelong Learning Centers for folks 50+ have courses as well, and some of these are taught by very experienced retired home photography business professionals and little or no cost.

There are many types of photography and the home photography business entrepreneur may want to specialize, perhaps in photography for news organizations such as the local daily or weekly paper, in advertising photography for local magazines and local firms that need to market their products. One of the most common forms of home photography business is for events and celebrations such as weddings, bar mitzvahs, anniversaries, and other events. These can be especially lucrative as repeat business and excellent multiple referrals.

Travel photographers have exciting home photography business lives, although it takes a lot of skill and a lot of travel expense and practice photography before that first paid vacation is finely paid for.

Some folks create a home photography business working as photojournalists or specializing in medical or science photographers. While quite lucrative, these almost require a four year degree with extensive photography and communication training. A college photography internship is a wonderful foot in the door for a home photography business as well.

A portfolio is a must for building clientele for a home photography business. This means taking lots and lots of unpaid photo shots to show off exceptional talent to potential clients.

Helpful ways to learn the ins and outs of home photography and a home photography business are by working as an assistant to a photographer, by joining associations and organizations of fellow photographers and by attending seminars and workshops on home business and photography.

There are also much cheaper ways to learn them directly from your home by downloading eCourses from the web.

Introducing Jenga

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) August 06, 2014

Get ready for bigger build-ups and bigger crashes, as the classic block-stacking, stack-crashing game Jenga® now has its own GIANT counterpart! Jenga® GIANT™ debuts on Amazon and with other retailers this month, joining the world famous Jenga® brand which has sold more than 70 Million games worldwide.

Manufactured and distributed by Art’s Ideas, Jenga® GIANT™ is the only genuine, licensed, giant, wood Jenga® game. It weighs a total of 17 lbs. and can stack up to three feet and higher! Jenga® GIANT™ uses the same rules as Classic Jenga® and comes with 54 precision cut, high quality, polished hardwood blocks in a sturdy box designed as a game play platform and for easy storage and transport.

Jenga® GIANT™ is perfect for backyard BBQs, birthday and holiday celebrations, college parties, and everywhere people gather together to have fun. Now it’s a party!™

“We are thrilled that our licensee, Art’s Ideas, has chosen Jenga® GIANT™ to join the visually stunning Jenga XXL® game,” said Paul Eveloff, partner of Pokonobe Associates, the licensor of the Jenga® brand. “Jenga® GIANT™ brings a whole new level of anticipation, excitement, and suspense as the tower stacks up to over three feet tall. It’s the perfect game for any gathering. This game rocks!”

Jenga® GIANT™ is recommended for one or more players, ages 10 to adult, and lists for $ 129.99 on JengaGiant.com, the company shop. An accessory kit will be available on jengagiant.com in September. It includes a sturdy carry bag to make it easy to throw the game in the car to take to the beach, a party, or most anywhere. It also includes a white Chalk Ink Marker to encourage writing personalized messages, truths or dares, educational information, marriage proposals, or anything you want on the blocks. A damp cloth will eliminate the “graffiti” and clean the slate for future messages. Lastly, it includes a strong, clear acrylic play base that seems to disappear, giving the illusion that your massive tower is floating in the air. This base makes it easy to play in the sand and on other uneven surfaces, and raises the game off the ground so players can stay on their feet, constantly moving around the tower, turning Jenga Giant into an active sport rather than a table game.

Jenga® is the original wood block game for suspense-building, Edge-of-Your-Seat-Fun!® launched in the United Kingdom more than thirty years ago and is owned by an estimated one in five American and Canadian households. It has many licensees such as Hasbro, USAopoly, Art’s Ideas, and NaturalMotion Games, Ltd., a subsidiary of Zynga.

The Jenga® mobile App features realistic physics, touch control, and social gameplay with stunning visuals and authenticity, and is available on the Apple App Store, Google play, and the Amazon Appstore.

The Bridal Show Success Guide

The Bridal Show Success Guide

The Successful Bridal Show Guide

It’s bridal show season again … with the time and money you put into being in bridal shows, you want to get the most out of your presence there, right?! Here are some tips…

1. Be sure to advertise that you will be at the Show! Post it on your website, send out flyers, etc.: “Don’t forget to come see us at the ‘Bridal Show’ on this date, this location, this time, etc.”. Placing a sticker on the back of business cards and handing them out at Shows is a great advertisement as well – be sure to tell them that you have a bridal program and do personal consultations for FREE and ask them to give any brides they know your card!

2. Once you are there, make sure you are set up and prepared before the brides start coming in! Bring plenty of literature (brochures and such)—it is better to have too many than to run out! Keep your booth clean and attractive, not cluttered.

3. Come up with something creative to set yourself apart from your competition and bring attention to your booth: i.e. an exciting theme, a special offer, demonstrations, giveaways, samples, etc…. I use a small white Xmas tree with lia sophia boxes and silver ribbons tied to each one hanging all over the tree with a “Bride” tree topper (It’s a porcelain doll tree topper with a gorgeous white dress on)! Bring your Calendar! Book the Shows right then!

4. Have a 3-minute infomercial planned – rehearse it and know it! You have approx 3 minutes to convince a passer-by that you offer a service they need!

5. Don’t forget to dress the part! Think of it like a business meeting, because in a sense that is what it is. The brides are looking for people to do business with. You wouldn’t show up to a wedding in everyday clothes would you?

6. Never leave your booth unattended! And don’t eat at your booth. You always want to portray a professional image. Even if it seems slow, you never know who might be watching.

7. When brides come by your booth, start up a conversation with them! Ask, “Are you planning your special day?” Be outgoing and excited about their day and be excited about your services and don’t forget to SMILE. Remember –it is ALL ABOUT THE BRIDE! Ask if she has a photo of her gown or has one picked out – let her know you do you private consultations! If she has a photo, compliment her! Gush ladies – make her feel special!

8. Even if the Show has brides register when they come in, try to get them to register with you as well. Giveaways and special drawings at your booth can help here, too. Offer an incentive for booking a Show that day or for scheduling their consultation! FREE shipping is an awesome incentive!

9. Once the show is over, contact your leads as soon as possible (1-3 days) to remind them of your services. Send out a letter or postcard thanking them for stopping by your booth and congratulating them again on their engagement. Offer some sort of show discount or incentive to get them to set a consultation with you.

10. Follow up. A week or so after your first contact, give them a call and/or send an email to keep you fresh on their minds. Offer again some sort of incentive with a deadline … i.e. “Get your free wedding website just for meeting with us! Hurry, offer ends September 1st!” (Maybe a month or so after the Bridal Show date). Then you might consider offering another bonus for booking a show with you.

Queen of Katwe’s Visit Inspires Students

White Plains, NY (PRWEB) May 28, 2014

When Uganda’s junior chess champion Phiona Mutesi met with students at Westchester County schools it was to do more than share a few pointers with the chess team. She and her coach, Robert Katende shared their inspiring stories of how chess, education and determination came together to create an amazing life transformation.

Phiona was born in the Katwe slum outside of Kampala, a place where “human waste is dumped and when it rains many people’s homes are flooded and they die. There are many diseases,” she told over 470 lower and middle school students at Greenwich Academy. The all-girls school was the first stop on their 5-day visit to Westchester and Fairfield Counties.

At the age of 6, Phiona, her mother and 2 brothers started living on the streets. An older sister was already pregnant by 14 and raising children of her own. Seeking a bowl of porridge, she came to a chess program run by Katende, a Sports Outreach missionary who had also grown up in the slums. He had made it out as a great soccer player, gone on to university earning a degree in civil engineering but felt compelled to go back to help the young people left behind.

First coming only for the porridge, unable to read or write, Phiona quickly learned chess, a game she had never seen before and went on to win several tournaments including the Africa Junior Chess Championship and in 2010 was the youngest player in the chess Olympiad held in Siberia. She has since represented her country in Istanbul and will compete in the 2014 Olympiad this summer in Norway.

“When did you first know you were good at chess?” a Greenwich Academy student asked.

“When I beat a boy,” Phiona replied. “He started to cry and he never came back to the program.”

Coach Katende explained that in the Uganda slums all girls are supposed to do is have children. “Women are marginalized in the society. They don’t go to school, they are not allowed to play sports. So for him to lose to a girl was very humiliating.”

Katende went on to explain how Phiona’s success has made her a role model and how she is giving back to her community. Phiona received an award at the 2013 Women in the World Summit and was able to pay her own school fees for the year as well as to set aside funds for her family. In December she used a portion to host a 5-day chess clinic for girls from the 5 slum areas around Kampala. The funds provided were to cover the costs for 200 girls; they had 460 attend!

“How do you prepare for a tournament,” asked another G.A. student.

“Right now I don’t because of my school.” Phiona, now 18, attends a boarding school in Kampala and she told the G.A. students her school day starts at 7:30 in the morning and goes until 10 p.m. six days a week. “On Sunday I do laundry.” When asked, the G.A. students opted not to match her schedule.

Master of Ceremonies for the assembly was G.A. student and chess player Hunter Korn whose family hosted, Phiona, her coach and the Sports Outreach team while they were in the Greenwich area. Later the Korn family hosted a small reception at their home where Hunter presented Coach Robert with a check for $ 15,000 which she raised by asking for donations instead of gifts for her bat mitzvah.

“While reading the book The Queen of Katwe, about the life of Phiona Mutesi, I was inspired by Phiona’s determination to improve her life in the slums of Uganda and the hardships and challenges that she had to overcome,” Hunter said. “When I heard about the chess school that she was seeking to build, I thought it was a great opportunity to help impact the lives of other kids like Phiona.” Hunter plans to stay involved with NSCF and Sports Outreach in order to continue to act as an Ambassador for the chess school and help coordinate more fundraising activities and interactions with the students.

The Greenwich Academy visit was part of a 33-day tour across America that is raising funds for US programs as well as helping to build a chess academy that will be part of a new education center being constructed in Kampala.

Other local appearances included Richard J. Bailey school in Greenburgh where Phiona and coach Robert spoke to over 400 students in a general assembly then stayed behind to play with the chess club. Phiona made the opening move for the NSCF Grand Prix tournament at Mamaroneck Avenue School in White Plains and spoke to all the 6th graders at Bronxville Middle School.
